Consumer Spending on Auto Repairs Rises in Lafayette Parish, Data Shows | Company

Consumer spending on automotive needs in Lafayette Parish jumped in April and remains well ahead of last year’s totals.

Data from the Lafayette Economic Development Authority indicates that sales at auto parts stores, gas stations and repair shops are each up at least 15% from last year’s totals and have been pulled from a months of some of the most important months on record. It was part of another month of increased retail sales in the parish, with total sales surpassing $699 million that month, a 6% increase from April 2021.

Due to the chip shortage and scarcity of new cars in Lafayette and across the country, many consumers are clinging to aging vehicles instead of buying new ones. Last month, auto parts sales in Lafayette Parish hit $10.3 million after hitting $11.3 million in March, the first time sales topped $10 million in a month. consecutive.

Sales at gas stations came in at $1.9 million after hitting $2.3 million in March, putting sales ahead of 47% over last year. Repair shop sales in April topped $4.9 million after climbing to $7.8 million in March, bringing sales 16% higher than a year ago.

In the city of Lafayette, taxable sales topped $475 million, the second-highest total for a month on record and second only to the $487 million raised in March.
